I met with Dr. Vaupel today as my two-week follow-up from surgery for a tendon transfer on my ankle to repair a drop foot syndrome that seriously effected my ability to walk without a brace. X-rays showed everything was looking good and healing well. He patiently explained all the stitches and the procedure he performed and answered all my questions making me feel very comfortable. I was excited to have some movement in my ankle that was not possible prior to my surgery. Stitches were removed and a hard walking cast was applied and now I have four weeks to rest and allow the swelling to recide and healing to become complete. Appreciated that I was seen within 5 minutes of the appointment time. First they took an X-ray of my foot, then Dr Vaupel checked out my foot, and gave his diagnosis with the X-rays right there. He clearly explained both options to correct the problem: surgery or over the counter orthotics and exercise. I chose to avoid surgery and do the exercises first. Beyond pleased with treatment. Dr. Vaupel and staff were the utmost respectful and thorough through my recovery. Leading me through at least two surgeries regarding my shattered calcaneous as well as an open wound caused by my tibia. I felt informed of all procedures which were followed up on daily after completion. There was a chance of loosing my foot and i owe him and his team as well as the other surgeons (plastic & infectious diesease) he worked with to get me off to a speedy recovery. I had a very complicated situation where 3 surges were required on and around my right foot. Not an easy orthopedic challenge for sure. Dr. Vaupel preformed and managed my surgery, and care with very successful results. I have no reservations in recommending him to anyone with a complicated diagnosis involving tendon repair, muscle and bone. My surgery was performed in Aug. 2018, and I am back to doing my normal activities ,including work outs: circuit training, yoga and preparing to go back to playing Pickle Ball. For years, I sought relief of nagging pain in my right ankle as I walked. The search brought me to the Arizona ankle boot, orthotics, and daily NSAIDS. None worked. January 2, 2019, my surgeon, Dr. Zachary Vaupel performed (R) right ankle replacement surgery. Six months later, June, 2019 the freedom of my walking is with joy and without brace. I threw away all shoes with special inserts ! I daily ride a bike 10 miles. Detroit Zoo walks, are a restored favorite. I almost laugh going up and down a ladder. Dr Vaupel is an efficient, humble, gifted surgeon. He is kind hearted and attentive to detail. When I saw my toes after he performed a bunionectomy and hammer toe repair; I could hardly recognize my foot. My toes were straight and my foot looked like a work of art. Dr Vaupel took the time to explain the procedures prior to my surgery and answered my questions thoroughly. Furthermore, my post op period was completely pain free ; I was given a nerve block and 11 weeks out I am still pain free.
