Conditions

Cause

Acetabular dysplasia occurs when the hip socket (acetabulum) is too shallow to adequately cover and support the femoral head. This condition often stems from developmental issues during infancy or childhood and may be associated with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).

Cause

Avascular necrosis (AVN) occurs when blood flow to the femoral head is disrupted, leading to bone tissue death. Causes include trauma, long-term steroid use, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medical conditions like sickle cell disease.

Cause

Degenerative joint disease, or osteoarthritis, involves the gradual wear and tear of cartilage in the hip joint. Factors contributing to this condition include aging, joint injuries, repetitive stress, and genetic predisposition.

Cause

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition where the hip joint doesn’t develop properly, leading to instability or dislocation. It often occurs in infants and can be influenced by genetic factors or positioning in the womb.

Cause

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) occurs when abnormal contact between the femoral head and the acetabulum leads to joint damage. This can result from bone spurs or structural abnormalities in the hip joint.

Cause

Hip arthritis involves inflammation and degeneration of the hip joint cartilage. Common types include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Cause

Loose bodies in the hip are fragments of bone or cartilage that have broken off and float within the joint space. They can result from trauma, degenerative conditions, or osteoarthritis.

Cause

Hip pain can arise from various conditions, including arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, muscle strains, or structural abnormalities. It may also result from referred pain due to spinal issues.

Cause

Inflammatory arthritis encompasses autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and ankylosing spondylitis, where the immune system attacks joint tissues, leading to inflammation.

Cause

A labral tear involves damage to the ring of cartilage (labrum) that surrounds the hip socket. Causes include trauma, repetitive motions, structural abnormalities, or degeneration.

Cause

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by decreased bone density and strength, increasing the risk of fractures. It results from an imbalance between bone resorption and formation.

Cause

Snapping hip, also known as coxa saltans, occurs when a tendon or muscle moves over a bony prominence in the hip, creating a snapping or popping sound. It may be external (iliotibial band over the greater trochanter), internal (iliopsoas tendon over bony structures), or intra-articular (loose bodies or labral tear).

Cause

Synovitis refers to inflammation of the synovial membrane lining the hip joint, which can occur due to injury, overuse, infection, or systemic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
