BIO
Leonardo Cavinatto, MD, Ph.D., is an orthopedic surgeon who focuses on treating knee, shoulder, hip, and elbow disorders in adults. Dr. Cavinatto has specialized training in Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Shoulder Surgery and Adult Hip and Knee Replacement. He earned his medical degree and completed his residency training and shoulder & elbow surgery specialization at the University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil. Following this training, he pursued a postdoctoral research fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis and earned his Ph.D. degree at the University of Sao Paulo. Dr. Cavinatto then complemented his training with three additional clinical fellowships: Adult Hip and Knee replacement Surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY; Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Jefferson Health Northeast in Philadelphia, PA; and Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI.
Dr. Cavinatto is actively involved in research. His recent projects have examined the role of orthobiologics (including PRP, bone marrow aspirate, and Stem Cells) to treat cartilage lesions in the knee. He is also participating in a project looking at the benefits of stem cells for rotator cuff repair in the shoulder. Dr. Cavinatto believes that in many instances surgery can be avoided. As such, he considers non-surgical or less-invasive treatment options to his patients when this is supported by high-quality evidence or science. Dr. Cavinatto lives in Birmingham, MI, and is married to Deborah. They have two daughters, Lana and Mila. In his free time, he enjoys running, playing tennis, wine tasting, and spending time with his family.
