Bunios are a bony bump that develops on the inside of the foot near the big toe.
Bunios are a bony bump that develops on the inside of the foot near the big toe.
They develop slowly as a result of pressure moving the big toe towards the second toe. Eventually, the anatomy of the bone changes which results in the bunion. The condition worsens making it difficult to walk or even wear shoes.
Bunions are possible in anyone, but are they are most common in women. This is because many women wear tight shoes that squeeze their feet together causing the pressure that develops and worsens bunions.
Non-Surgical:
Wider Footwear: In certain cases wearing wider shoes with proper space can reduce pain and make condition very manageable. Certain shoes can be modified to stretch the area that puts pressure on your toes. Consult with your doctor to get more information
Padding: Protective Bunion padding, can be purchased to provide cushioning to the painful area. You can buy these at many drugstores or pharmacy. Be sure to test the padding as the size of the pad could increase the size of the bunion.
Icing: Applying ice several times a day for no more than 20 minutes can help reduce swelling. Do not apply ice directly to your skin.
Medication (Non-Steroidal): Certain drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen can reduce pain and swelling,
Surgical:
Surgery may be suggested if pain does not reduce after a period time following non-surgical treatment. Surgery will look to realign the bone, tendons, ligaments, and nerves to help bring the big toe back to the correct position.
